Understanding Erectile Dysfunction in Men: A Holistic View

When it comes to erectile dysfunction (ED), the conversation often centers around quick fixes—pills, performance, pressure. But beneath the surface lies a complex interplay between the physical, emotional, energetic, and spiritual bodies. I recently interviewed had an interview with a doctor of Chinese and functional medicine Dr. Steph Whittle-Bennets, and together we explored the multi-layered roots of erectile dysfunction and Tantra. Drawing from Dr. Steph’s clinical insight and my own experience as a Tantra and Taoist practitioner working with the subtle body, we looked at what truly brings men back into connection with their full sexual vitality—especially as they age. This article offers a holistic lens on erectile dysfunction and Tantra as a pathway to healing.—especially as they age. the multilayered roots of ED, and how both physical and energetic healing can bring men back into connection with their full sexual vitality.

Bold text reading ‘I love sex’ represents the reclamation of sacred sexuality through Tantra and holistic healing.
Sex is sacred—when we reconnect to our bodies, we reclaim pleasure, power, and presence

1. The Physical Roots: Atherosclerosis, Belly Fat, and Stress

ED often begins subtly, a symptom of the body whispering its distress. One of the primary physical contributors is atherosclerosis, where arteries harden and narrow due to plaque buildup, reducing blood flow to the penis. This condition is worsened by a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, smoking, and chronic inflammation. As belly fat increases—particularly visceral fat—it becomes hormonally active, converting testosterone into estrogen, tipping the hormonal scale away from sexual health.

Stress compounds the problem. Chronic cortisol elevation affects everything from insulin resistance to sleep quality and libido. Dr. Steph explains how cortisol-driven hormonal shifts can lead to physical changes in the penis, including shortening due to poor tissue health. Many men ignore early warnings—until function is lost.

2. Nitric Oxide: The Forgotten Key to Sexual Vitality

Erections are a function of blood flow, and nitric oxide (NO) is the master signal that tells blood vessels to dilate. As men age, and especially when they lead sedentary lives or consume inflammatory foods, NO production decreases. Dr. Steph points out that while pharmaceuticals like Viagra extend NO activity, they don’t solve the root issue: production.

Restoring NO levels naturally involves eating nitrate-rich foods—beetroot, leafy greens, pomegranate—and doing targeted movement, such as the Nitric Oxide Dump, a simple 4-minute daily exercise protocol. Supplements like ZMA (zinc, magnesium aspartate, B6) and Alpha Nitrox Boost (arginine, curcumin, calcium phosphate, and more) can support cellular NO production. Look for formulations by brands like Willow, NOW and BioSync, which package these in ways men resonate with.

3. Hormone Imbalance: Testing and Transformation

Low testosterone (T), high estrogen (E), and declining DHEA are common imbalances in men with ED. These are not just lab numbers—they’re indicators of a man’s vitality. Testosterone fuels libido, erections, mood, motivation, and muscle mass. Estrogen, while necessary in small amounts, must be balanced. Too much can feminize traits and dampen libido.

Dr. Steph emphasizes testing for free testosterone, estradiol, DHEA, progesterone, and even sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) to get the full picture. Not all testosterone is bioavailable, and high SHBG can lock it away. Balding and weight gain often accompany poor T metabolism. She likens testosterone to estrogen—there’s the good, the bad, and the balanced.

4. Free Radicals, Inflammation, and Arterial Health

Modern life bombards the body with oxidative stress—from poor-quality food, environmental toxins, unresolved emotional tension, lack of rest, and even overtraining. These stressors generate free radicals, unstable molecules that damage blood vessel linings, contribute to cellular aging, and disrupt nitric oxide production—the very element needed for sustained erections.

The body, in its brilliant wisdom, responds to this damage by using cholesterol as a makeshift patch, laying it down like scaffolding to stabilize injured arterial walls. Over time, however, this response leads to plaque buildup—atherosclerosis—which narrows the arteries and reduces blood flow. The penis, dependent on strong circulation, is often the first place this dysfunction reveals itself.

Zinc, vitamin C, selenium, and other antioxidants are crucial in neutralizing free radicals. But supplements alone are not enough. What’s needed is a full anti-inflammatory lifestyle: one that includes grounding practices to calm the nervous system, a nutrient-dense whole foods diet, emotional detoxing, proper hydration, and restorative sleep. I often remind clients that inflammation is not just physical—it's also the energetic heat of unprocessed emotion. We must address both.

5. The Hidden Psychological Terrain

Erectile dysfunction and Tantra intersect profoundly when we explore the emotional and psychological bodies. Divorce, trauma, shame, and especially religious conditioning like Catholic guilt all play a role. Divorce, trauma, shame, especially religious conditioning like Catholic guilt, all play a role. Over the years of doing this work, I have noticed that many men begin struggling post-divorce—not due to physiology alone, but a loss of self-worth, unresolved guilt, or internalized failure.—not due to physiology alone, but a loss of self-worth, unresolved guilt, or internalized failure.

Antidepressants such as Prozac can further complicate matters, often reducing libido, dulling penile sensitivity, and creating an overall numbing effect. This stands in direct contrast to Tantric principles, where we aim to awaken and expand sensitivity. When we suppress pain or discomfort, we also suppress our capacity for deep pleasure—leading not to peace, but to numbness. Even men with perfect lab values may find that unresolved pain, resentment, or fear create blockages in the energetic flow of desire and erection.

6. Herbal and Supplement Support

Nature has provided an abundant apothecary for men’s sexual health:

  • Tongkat Ali: boosts free testosterone and overall virility.

  • Tribulus Terrestris: supports stamina, performance, and desire.

  • Horny Goat Weed: increases libido and energy.

  • Ginkgo Biloba: enhances blood circulation, primarily to the brain, but systemically as well.

  • Hawthorn Berry: supports cardiovascular health.

  • Saw Palmetto: protects the prostate and regulates hormonal health.

  • Cotton Root Bark: promotes oxytocin and emotional bonding.

Brands like NOW create effective blends—TestoJack 100 (broad-spectrum) and TestoJack 300 (pure Tongkat Ali) are both excellent, depending on severity and goals.

7. Prostate Health: The Gatekeeper of Male Vitality

The prostate is often overlooked in conversations about erections, but it is central to a man's sexual and reproductive vitality. It produces seminal fluid, regulates urine flow, and sits at the energetic center of the male pelvic basin—intimately connected with power, control, and masculine identity.

When inflamed or congested, the prostate can cause everything from reduced ejaculatory force to chronic pelvic pain, erectile difficulties, and fertility issues. Dr. Steph recommends monitoring PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels annually, particularly after age 40, even if no symptoms are present. Inflammation can smoulder silently for years before erupting into dysfunction.

Contributors to poor prostate health include:

  • Chronic inflammation (systemic or localized)

  • Genetic predisposition

  • Poor lymphatic drainage

  • Toxic load from the liver and kidneys

  • Sedentary living and restricted movement in the hips and pelvis

Interventions include Saw Palmetto, beta-sitosterol, stinging nettle root, and detoxifying herbs that support the liver and kidneys. Dr. Steph also highlights the impact of tight clothing, prolonged cycling, and poor hydration on the prostate.

From a Tantric view, the prostate is a sacred gatekeeper of masculine life force. In sessions, I work with clients to reconnect to this area energetically—helping clear shame, fear, and stagnation that may manifest as physical symptoms. Healthy prostate function is not just about avoiding disease—it's about reclaiming power, presence, and pleasure in the masculine body.

8. Semen Retention and Tantric Life Force

From a Tantric and Taoist lens, semen is life force (jing)—and the practice of semen retention is central to both erectile dysfunction and Tantra. Excessive ejaculation weakens this force, especially as a man ages. Retention isn’t repression—it’s redirection. It allows energy to rise, build, and expand through the body.

As part of my Level 2 Initiation offering, I teach semen retention techniques, guiding men to learn how to experience orgasm without ejaculation. This advanced practice leads to greater intimacy, stamina, and spiritual connection, allowing men to channel their sexual energy into spiritual growth, emotional depth, and embodied power. Chinese medicine outlines specific guidelines: the older a man becomes, the less frequently he should ejaculate to preserve vitality. These traditions recognize sex as sacred—not something to squander, but something to revere.

9. The Collaborative Path to Healing

Erectile dysfunction isn’t a curse—it’s a call. A call back to the body, to vitality, to self-honouring. It’s an invitation to shed layers of shame, stress, and silence. To reclaim not just performance—but presence.
